History you can trust

Representing the people of Charleston since 1950.

Founded in 1950, Legare, Hare & Smith has represented clients in the Lowcountry for over seventy years.

Legare, Hare and Smith is a local law firm that has been serving Lowcountry clients for over 70 years. T. Allen Legare, Jr. and James C. Hare founded the firm after being admitted to the S.C. Bar in 1941 and serving their country during World War II. When the war ended, they returned to Charleston, and in 1947 they began practicing law together as Legare & Hare. Their office was located at 63 Broad Street in downtown Charleston. Allen and J.C. first met Gaines W. Smith when he was working as a Clerk in the Federal Court in Charleston. Gaines was admitted to the S.C. Bar in 1950m, and shortly thereafter, he began practicing law with Allen and J.C., and the firm became known as Legare, Hare & Smith.

These three “southern gentlemen” practiced law together at 63 Broad Street until 2001, when J. C. Hare decided to retire and several years later in 2005, T. Allen Legare, Jr. also retired. Gaines continued to practice law at 63 Broad Street until he moved the office to 720 St. Andrews Blvd., Charleston, SC in September 2008.

In 2010, Jeffrey C. Moore, Gaines’ grandson, was admitted to the S.C. Bar and he joined his grandfather as a member of the firm of Legare, Hare & Smith. They practiced law together until Gaines’s death in October 2017.

On April 30, 2018, the firm of Legare, Hare & Smith relocated to its current location of 1 Carriage Lane, Building H, 2nd Floor, Charleston, SC 29407, where Jeffrey C. Moore is currently practicing law.

Ever mindful of the needs of today’s clients, and with the values and lessons learned from his grandfather, Jeff is proud to continue serving the people of the Lowcountry today.
